UNISON represents people employed in all areas of local government.
We make sure the needs and rights of workers in this sector and related public services in our service group are recognised and defended. By working together within UNISON, local government workers can achieve more.
The local government service group brings together members who face similar employment issues. This strengthens our work to improve pay and conditions, campaign to keep jobs and quality public services, ensure workplaces are safe and challenge discrimination.
Being part of a service group also helps us to tailor our services to members and work together effectively and democratically to make sure members’ concerns are heard.
UNISON’s local government service group has been set up to represent the employment needs of our members working in councils and related public services.
Who are our members in the local government service group
The local government service group welcomes members who are employed or contracted by organisations including:
- councils;
- schools;
- further education;
- the Care Quality Commission;
- the Food Standards Agency.
Service group benefits
Service groups give UNISON the knowledge of issues specific to our sectors and in turn, service group members have access to union benefits tailored to their job. So if you experience problems your UNISON representatives will be able to help, in part because they know the issues affecting your sector from first-hand experience
When it comes to professional development, the union can tailor our courses to workers in specific sectors so that UNISON members can continue improving their skills.
Issues and achievements
Our local government service group is essential to advancing employment and other issues facing our members at work. For example, we focus on the protection of the future of local government as a publicly funded, free service, by campaigning against the privatisation of local government services.
Service group structure
Members are elected by an annual ballot to UNISON’s local government service group executive who decide on policies and activities. The annual local government service group conference is where decisions on priorities and policies relating to UNISON members are made.
